Apparently you should fire thrusters when sucked inside the event-horizon of a black hole

At least according to a new article in nature. So, you can't escape a blackhole once past the event horizon. Going faster just means you're going to get on a faster path to the singularity.

However, while free-fall means you'll live longest, the idea that you shouldn't fire thrusters assumes that the rocket's velocity when entering the hole is zero. If it's not, then thrusting might get you to the free fall path. However, it's still risky because if you overshoot, you may end up on a faster path.

Last chance to participate in the BBQ survey

I'm going to try to send out the invite once I get home.

Also apropos of nothing: pretty pictures of Mars.

BBQ is going to be on Sunday June 24th

It was easily the most popular date in both emails and the survey. More details to come.
