At least according to a new article in nature. So, you can't escape a blackhole once past the event horizon. Going faster just means you're going to get on a faster path to the singularity.
However, while free-fall means you'll live longest, the idea that you shouldn't fire thrusters assumes that the rocket's velocity when entering the hole is zero. If it's not, then thrusting might get you to the free fall path. However, it's still risky because if you overshoot, you may end up on a faster path.
