My neighborhood lost power last night, even though the thunderstorm was reasonably wussy and over like an hour before the power went out. I stayed up a bit but it took more than an hour to come on so called it in early. Unexpectedly Pepco was actually pretty fast to get it working again, so we got it back fairly early in the morning.

I'm betting the system is still fairly fragile after the hurricane repairs, which isn't all that much of a surprise. Still, I'm starting to think in areas of the country that with weak power grids or that are too cheap or too expansive for underground wires generator parties may be a phenomenon of the future.

Generator parties? Sounds fun.

I'm rather worried about the power grid at times; it probably needs a major overhaul. What I've been wondering, and toying with the idea is, if I ever got my own house, I'd want some sort of power generator within (solar, I dunno what have you) to help generate electricity, and then if I managed to have any extra, feed it back into a power grid. Also I'd try to make sure it was properly insulated to reduce heating and cooling bills. (In Cali they have grants available to help with this sort of thing! Tho with the new govn'r, who knows what he'll chop :)
