In happy news, just got a job as an office manager, although manager is really an overstatement, administrative assistant/secretary seems a more apt description of the duties. This leaves me well pleased.

Anyways, the job includes some proofing, and that has never really been my strong suit. Do any of you, my loyal readers, care to recommend a grammar reference? I'm looking for something portable and paperback with a good table of contents so I can quickly brush up on any given rule. In exchange, I'll do my best to steadily improve compliance of this beloved little journal with common rules of American english. :P

Strunk & White's Elements of Style is the classic tiny paperback reference. Don't remember if there's an index, though... You might also try looking to see if various newspapers have their style guides online.

I have some older books, including Strunk and Whity I believe and the Harbrace College Handbook. I'm more than happy to give them to you.
