I'm seeing Italian Job at Loews Centerpark 7:30 pm Monday. If anyone other than the posters on my original LJ entry about this wanna come, feel free to show up. :P
I'd tend to agree on the safe cracking. I had no objection to the guy doing it by ear and feel at the start, but the heroine doing it seemed rather silly to me. The movie was very explicit that she always used equipment to crack safes; so I don't know how she did it exactly nor do I find it particularly credible that she could do it.
As for the romance, I assumed that there would be a hookup as that's how these things tend to work in movies. But yeah, it wasn't really setup nor was it meaningful in any way to me.
My other critique would be that aside from the hacker, none of the supporting characters really came alive to me. They all had their assigned key characteristics and abilities as well as one or two amusing quircks. However, the ensemble in Ocean's 11 for example was twice as big but felt more alive and interesting.
This isn't to say I didn't like the movie, just that I don't intend to buy it.
Fair warning, spoilers used freely
