Jun. 20th, 2007 04:06 pmSo, Pakistan has apparently formally complained that Salman Rushdie has been knighted.
Just as a quick note, if you want to do a classy poke in the eye against radical Islam, this is a good way to do it. Unlike the original cartoons, there's nothing remotely bigoted here. Interestingly, while governments have griped, there hasn't yet been any violent protests. I guess we'll see if this keeps up.
I need to actually read Rushdie. Although, when I've heard him on NPR I liked him.
Addendum: Pokes in the eye aren't nearly as important as actual policy change though. Apparently Human Rights Watch was able to stay (hopefully indefinitely) a stoning for "immoral" behavior in Iran. I link to the Broadsheet's coverage not so much because this is unusual, but just to note for the record that human rights groups do care about women in Islamic countries.
