So recently General Pace, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff argued against lifting the Don't ask Don't Tell policy because he found homosexuality to be a form of immorality on par with adultery. He did so in uniform and admittedly has later said he shouldn't have expressed his personal opinion on the mater. However, he hasn't apologized.

I'm particularly impressed with Toles' response.

I haven't actually read the series, just a lot of the reviews and parodies. I definitely buy, from what I've seen, that everyone is being written massively out of character. However, that being said, the ending seemed to make sense to me. Admittedly it was a bit anti-climatic, but given the setup it's a logical result from a storytelling perspective.
